Summary

North-South relations are being superseded by South-East relations, with profound implications for    Africa’s development. This is the first good news for Africa since the end of the bipolar political order. The Chinese and Indians are warmly welcomed to Africa for very different reasons other than economics and finance. A growing proportion of Africans have grown weary of continued Western paternalism and the tendency to give aid with one hand and to retrieve it with the other through unfair trade practices and debt structures.

The growing engagement by China and India in Africa can become a positive force, but only when African states are prepared to negotiate from a stronger and more informed platform. In the absence of deliberate and proactive African action, the involvement of China and India in Africa could turn out to be ‘neocolonialism by invitation’.

Africa’s strategic options and developmental challenges are being redefined by the complex transformations in 21st century international relations. The present ‘moment’ in international affairs suggests another opportunity to change the continent’s rather marginal place in global political and economic power. In this emerging new world order, the ‘new southern powers’ (i.e. China and India) are poised to play a greater role, to provide some support and an enabling international environment for the continent to chart its own alternative developmental course. Read more

One Response to “New Book: The Rise of China and India in Africa”

  1. It is better. Africa’s children have been suffering from starvation because of western Hippocratic governments. they do not like to see the betterment of Africans. The western countries have invested in African civil war, armed conflict and they have been dumping their trash weapons. They support the dictators against the wish of the people for peace and democracy. So let the china and Indians come to Africa. we will have two chances. either we will grow economically and will live a happy life or they will eat us at all.
