• The Ethiopian Gaze

  I always wonder if this ambivalent and pensive visual exchange, which never involves words, is an Ethiopian value in itself. Or is it ambivalence that Ethiopians find themselves in trying to reconcile their home grown norms of greeting everyone, including strangers with western values of greeting? Back home; people nod, wish you peace, or ask you how your evening has been when meeting you. In Ethiopia, passing by without greeting a bystander leaves a very eerie feel and a bad taste in the mouth of anyone.

• ጥያቄው ከስኳር እና ከዋልድባ መምረጥ አይደለም

  ቁሳዊ ልማትን የማፋጠን እና ታሪካዊ/መንፈሳዊ እሴቶችን የመጠበቅ ጉዳይ ሁልጊዜም አብረውና ተስማምተው ላይሄዱ ይችላሉ። አንዱን ለማሳደግ ሌላውን ዋጋ ማስከፈል የሚያስፈልግበት አጋጣሚ የመስተጋብሩ ቋሚ መገለጫ ይመስላል። ጥያቄውን በአንድ ነጠላ የልማት ፕሮጀክት አንጻር መመልከት ይቻላል። “ፕሮጀክቱ እገሌ የተባለውን ታሪካዊና መንፈሳዊ እሴት ያለው ቦታ/ሕንጻ… ይነካዋል አይነካውም? ከነካው ምን ያህል? ወዘተ” በሚሉ ጥያቄዎች ዙሪያ መነጋገርም መደራደርም ተገቢ ነው። ከዚህ መሰሉ ዝርዝር ንግግር በፊት ግን በመጀመሪያ ስለ “ልማቱ” እና ሰለ “እሴቶቻችን” ምንነትና ፋይዳ ዘርዘር አድርጎ መነጋገር ይገባን ነበር። ይህ በተለያዩ ወገኖች የሚሰጠው የተለያየ ሚዛን ቢያንስ ለሚቀጥሉት 100 ዓመታት በሚካሔዱ የልማት ክንውኖች መላልሶ እንደሚገጥመን አልጠራጠርም። ለዚህም ነው በቅድሚያ በሐልዮት ደረጃ ጉዳዩን ማብላላት አስፈላጊ ነው የምለው። የቁሳዊ ልማታችን እና የባህል ልማታችን ምንና ምን ናቸው?

• የአድዋ ልጆች፤ ምኒልክ፣ መለስ እና እኔ

  የታሪክ አጋጣሚ ሆኖ አድዋ ምኒልክን ብቻ ሳይሆን ጠቅላይ ሚኒስትር መለስንም ወልዳለች። ልጅነታቸው ግን ለየቅል ነው። ምኒልክ ለአድዋ የመንፈስ ልጅ ናቸው፤ መለስ የደምና የአጥንት ልጅ ናቸው። የደምና የአጥንት ልጆች የመንፈስ ልጅነትንም ደርበው የማግኘት እድል አላቸው፤ ሁልጊዜም ግን ላይሳካ ይችላል። ገብረ ሕይወት ባይከዳኝን አይቶ ድርብ ልጅነቱን ማድነቅ ነው፤ መለስን ተመልክቶ የደምና የአጥነት ሆኖ መቅረቱን መታዘብ ነው። መካ የተወልዶ ሁሉ በነብዩ መንፈስ እንደማይቃኝ፣ የቤተልሔሙ ልጅ ሁሉ በክርስቶስ መንገድ እንደማይሔድ መሆኑ ነው።

• ከቢቢሲ ጋራ

  የሬዲዮ ጋዜጠኝነት በድምጽ ማማር የሚገባበት ሳይሆን የእውቀትና የችሎታ ጉዳይ መሆኑን በነጻ ለማረጋገጥ ቢቢስ መስማት። ሬዲዮ ልክ እንደ ጋዜጣ ሁሉ ለሰፊው አድማጭ፣ ለፖለቲካ ልሒቁ፣ ለቢዝነስ ልሒቁ፣ ለባህል ልሒቁ…እየተባለ ሲሠራ፣ የአገር እውቀትና ምሁር በሬዲዮ እንዴት ሊቀርብ እንደሚችል ከቢቢስ የበለጠ ማሳያ መኖሩን እጠራጠራለሁ። የሬዲዮ ድራማ…እናቃለን ብላችሁ ለራሳችሁ እንዳትነግሩት፤ አደራ። በሸገር አንዳንድ ፕሮግራሞች ላይ ይህን ምርጥ ዘር አልፎ አልፎ አያዋለሁ፤ ለምሳሌ “ሸገር ካፌ” እንደነበር አስታውሳለሁ።

• An Oromo Obama Revisited

  Here, I would like to recognize that the debate about the “Oromo question” and its fate in relation to the Ethiopian state has been a subject of household discussion among the Oromo elite itself. Recently, moderate voices about addressing the Oromo question are becoming loud and persuasive. We also heard about negotiations undertaken by the Ginbot 7 leadership and OLF factions (I don’t know how many factions are out there) about policy matters. Any Ethiopian from any political dispensation should welcome such moves and gestures NOT because G7 and OLF are the “sole and legitimate representatives” of non-Oromos and Oromos respectively. In lieu, they command significant following and posture in the opposition camp. Even if they do not, we welcome their moves as fellow concerned citizens.
