Breaking News: EU Monitors Criticize The Elections

EU elections observers head Thijs Berman said today that the “elections fall short of certain international committments.” This concluding observation was similar to the statement Ana Gomes, the EU’s mission head in 2005, made about the elections then. Berman told foreign and local journalists in Addis Ababa that his mission “considers that the playing field for the 2010 election was not sufficiently balanced, leaning in favor of ruling party in many areas.”

Most opposition leaders didn’t expect this tough statement, according to our sources in the capital. A day before the elections, Berman had given a generally positive remark about the elections.

Sources confirmed that PM Meles met Bernam last night. The PM and his supporters were having a rally to celebrate their victory as Berman delivered this critical preliminary statement.
