Welcome to the emerging Ethiopia-an oligarchic authoritarian state that juggles the support and international assistance of an ambivalent west and a regardless China. In the tradition of Marx’s dialectical materialism (an orphan of modernity currently bashed for being Teleological, Universalist and Eurocentric), one thing is evident- every stage of societal development has systemic contradictions and hence sows its seeds of destruction.

ክርክሩ “ለምን ይቅርታ ጠየቀች” ሳይሆን በዋናነት ይቅርታ ለመጠየቅ ተጠቀመችበት የተባለው አገላለጽ ነው። በእውነትም አገላለጹ እርሷን ለማዋረድ፣ ደጋፊዎቿን ለማሳፈር ሆን ተብሎ የተቀመረ እንደሆነ የሚያከራክር አይደለም። በዚህ ጉዳይ ላይ የብርቱካንን ምስክርነት ሳንሰማ “ይህኛውን ቃል፣ ያኛው አረፍተ ነገር” ብሎ መከራከር ትርጉም ካለው መደምደሚያ ላይ ማድረስ አይችልም። ብርቱካን ይቅርታ በጠየቀችበት ደብዳቤ ውስጥ በጣም ያስገረመኝን አንድ አረፍተ ነገር ልጥቀስ። “…ወደዚህ ስህተት ልገባ የቻልኩት መንግሥት የውጭ ኀይሎችን ተጽእኖ በመፍራት ሊያስረኝ አይችልም፤ ካሰረኝም ተገዶ በአጭር ጊዜ ይፈታኛል በሚል የተሳሳተ ግንዛቤ ነው።” ቃላት ለአንድ ቀን እግር አውጥተው ወደየመጣችሁበት ተመለሱ ቢባሉ እነዚህ ቃላት የነብርቱካንን ሰፈር (ፈረንሳይ ለጋሲዮን) ዳገት ችለው ይወጡታል? ብርቱካን ይቅርታው ስለጠየቀችበት ከባቢያዊ፣ አካላዊ እና ስነ ልቦናዊ ሁኔታ የራሷን ቃል ሳንሰማ “ቢሆንም…ምንም ቢሆን…” ማለት ብዙዎችን ከወዲሁ የሚያሳጣ አመለካከት ይመስለኛል። ጊዜ ሰጥቶን ዝርዝሩን እንሰማለን።

ሁለተኛው የአመለካከት ዘርፍ “ዋናው መፈታቷ” ብሎ የሚቆመው ነው። ይህ ምልከታ ለብርቱካን ሰብአዊነት የበለጠ ቦታ ይሰጣል፤ ለከፈለችው ዋጋ ከፍተኛ ዋጋ በመስጠትም “እርሷ የበኩሏን አድርጋለች” ብሎ ሊያምንም ይችላል። ከዚያም ባለፈ ስል ልጇ እና እናቷ ወዘተ በማሰብ መፈታቷን የራሱ ግብ አድርጎ ያስቀምጠቃል።

በአጭሩ አቶ መለስ ብርቱካን “ድጋሚ ይቅርታ ትጠይቅና እንለቃታለን” እያሉን ነው። መለስ “ካለፈው ታሪኳ አንጻር ድጋሚ ይቅርታ ብትጠይቅ አይገርመኝም፤ መንግሥትም ከልምዱ አኳያ ይቅርታ ቢያደርግላት አይደኝቀንም” ብለዋል። ትርጉም ግልጽ መሰለኝ።እንዲያውም አይጋ ፎረም ላይ እንዳነበብኩት ከሆነ እርሷ ብቻ ሳትሆን ቤተሰብም፣ ጠበቃም…ስለእርሷ ተገብቶ ይቅርታ ሊጠይቅላት እንደሚችል አንቀጽ ተጠቅሶ “አቅጣጫው” ተብራርቷል። በአጭሩ ጥሪው “እርሷ እምቢ ማለቷ ስለማይቀር እባካችሁ አንዳችሁ ይቅርታ ጠይቁላትና እንገላገል” ይመስላል። በቀዳሚው የቅንጅት አመራሮች እስር ወቅት ፕሮፌሰር መንስፍ ወልደ ማርያም “ለኢሕአዴግ የማርያም መንገድ እንስጠው” በማለት ታሳሪዎቹ እንዲፈርሙ ሐሳብ አቅርበው ነበር ይባላል። ይህም ሌላ “የማርያም መንገድ” ጥያቄ ይሆን?

ሞራል በፖለቲካ ውስጥ ያለውን ቦታ ባስታወስኩ ቁጥር የዛሬዎቹ ይቅርታ ጠያቂ እና ሰጪዎች ልዩነት አብሮ ይመጣብኛል። ብርቱካ እና መለስ የሁለት ትውልድ ብቻ ሳይሆን የሁለት ዓለምም ሰዎች ናቸው (“መለስ” ስል አቶ መለስን ብቻ ማለቴ አይደለም፤ “ብርቱካን” ስል የእርሷን ሐሳብ የሚጋሩ በተለይም የትውልድ አቻዎቿን ማለቴ እንደሆነ ሁሉ)። በዚህ ጉዳይ ላይ በሌላ ጽሑፍ እመለስበት ይሆናል፤ መለስ፣ ብርቱካንን እና ቴዲን ሊረዷቸው ያልቻሉበትን ምክንያት ፍለጋ። ለመሆኑ አሁን ይቅርታ ጠያቂው ማነው? ይቅርታ ሰጪውስ? ብርቱካን የእነአቶ መለስን ይቅርታ ትፈልጋለች ወይስ እነአቶ መለስ የእርሷ ይቅርታ ይገባቸዋል? ዓለም ይህን አትፈቅድ ይሆናል እንጂ ለነገሩስ በአደባባይ ብርቱካንንም ሆነ የኢትዮጵያን ሕዝብ ይቅርታ መጠየቅ የነበረባቸው አሳሪዎቿ ነበሩ።

All of the blame on the current situation cannot be laid on the door of the incumbent. We have witnessed a relentless fall out and division of the opposition camp in recent years. Most of the times, these divisions are either about strategies or personalities.
…Much of what comes in leadership also depends on the followership. In my opinion, most people who sympathize, if not support, the Ethiopian opposition has adversely impacted the way the leadership attempted to operate, often out of positive intentions. One of the usual pitfalls is the urge to see immediate results and hence hurrying opposition parties to do this or that as soon as possible. I call it the temptation of time.

በነገራችን ላይ

የሰሞኑ የኢሕአዴግ ጉባኤ ምን ማለቱ ነው? እኛ እኮ ቻይና ሞዴላችን ናት ሲባል በኢኮኖሚ ብቻ መስሎን ነበር። ውይ በፓርቲ ልብስም ጭምር ሆነ እንዴ? ኮፍያው አልቀረ፤ ምንጣፉ አልቀረ። አይ እንዲህ ከሆነ አንድ ፊቱን አጠራርም ይቀየርልና። ሊቀ መንበር መሌ ይባልልን፤ ልክ ሊቀ መንበር ማኦ ወይም ሊቀ መንበር መንጌ እንዲል። ጉባኤው በኢቲቪ የተዘገበበት መንገድ ደግሞ በልጅነታችንን ያየነውን የኢሰፓ ጉባኤ የሚያስታውስ ነው። “አውራ ፓርቲ” በደንብ እየገባችን ነው።

ግን ግን ይሄ “አውራ ፓርቲ” የሚለው ስያሜ በድርጅቱ ሊቀ መንበር ታምኖበት የጸደቀ ነው? ትርጉሙ እኮ ያምታታል። ለምሳሌ “አውራ” የሚለው ዋና፣ ታላቅ፣ መሪ፣ የጫጩቶቹ ፓርቲዎች ሁሉ አባት የሚል በጎ ትርጉም ይሰጣል። እናቲቱን ዶሮ መፈለግ የሕዝብ ጉዳይ ነው።
ጸረ ልማትና ጸረ ሕዝብ ኀይሎች ግን “አውራ” የሚለውን “እንደልማድህ ለፍልፍ፣ ተናገር፣ ወሬ እንደሆን አያልቅብህም፣ አንተን ከማዳመጥ ሌላ ምን ምርጫ አለን አውራብን፣ ደሞ ጀመረህ በል አውራብን ልባችንንም አውልቀው” እያሉ የተሳሳተ ትርጉም ሊሰጡት ይችላሉ። እስቲ አሁን አንዱ ተንኮለኛ “አውራ ፓርቲያችን” ሲል ምን ማለቱ ነው? ደግሞስ ይህ ስያሜ አጋር የምንላቸውን ፓርቲዎች ጸረ ሕዝቦች “ጫጩት ፓርቲዎች” እንዲሏቸው በር አይከፍትም ወይ? በሒደት “አውራ ፓርቲ” ምስጋና መሆኑ ቀርቶ ስላቅ ሊሆን ይችላል። ስለዚህ ወይ ይህንን ቃል አለአግባባ አጥብቆ ወይም አላልቶ ማንበብን፤ እንዲሁም ለራስም ሆነ ለሌላ ሰው ከተፈቀደው ውጭ የሆነ ትርጉም ሊሰጥ በሚችል ወይም ሊሰጥ ይችላል ተብሎ በሚያስጠረጥር ቃናና ድምጽ መናገርን የሚከለክል ሕግ ማውጣት የአዲሱ ፓርላማ የመጀመሪያ ስራ ይሁን አለዚያም ሳይለመድ ይቀየር። አማራጭ መጠሪያዎችን እንቀበላለን። ሙሉውን ለማንበብ እዚህ ይጫኑ።

The most daunting task is measuring how much the New Generation is ready to invest in order to set the country on the right track. Is the New generation politically matured and courageous enough to learn from history? What is the root cause of this generational obsession in our politics, anyway? Is it uninterrupted generation-wide dissatisfaction, or lack of intentional collaboration among generations?

There will not be any clear-cut, single-generation politics. Finding the right mix of generations, both at the party and national level, is the cardinal question of political succession. Anyone who “thinks s/he can dance” can join politics. So you think you can dance? Play politics.

No wonder civility and celebrating dissent were the trademarks of Ethiopian society when it comes to a very crucial issue potentially divisive and violent-our understanding of God. Some serious criticisms about Ethiopia’s modern intellectuals on my last articles have made me question whether I (as an individual) and us (as a collective) have the courage to declare that our understanding of any notion is by no means a monopoly of the truth. This is an obvious truism, which is seldom translated into action.

The problem is that sequential protests can happen only in authoritarian regimes with a relative degree of apprehension to use the oppressive machinery of the state early and decisively. The Sene 1 protests show how a brutal early response (killing 42 people in less than 4 hours) thwarted the formation of positive cascades, or worse, created the reverse effect(fence-sitters constructing even higher fences). Compare that to Haile Selassie’s meek responses to the sequence of protests before the revolution and how it made students and other members of social groups think that dissent was not ruthlessly punishable.

As it is the act of the patriarch and his people, most of those who debate the statue’s meaning and validity do so only in terms of the tenets of the church’s teaching and its history. They take it as an internal debate; something that “others” have no standing in. But the truth is this: this is not a bust erected in a compound of a church. It is in a public space in one of the trendiest areas of our capital. Monuments and statues in cities have profound human value. They not only represent the human condition; they are part of the condition itself.

When was the last time where we saw mothers or fathers being appreciated for being model parents? Which religious leader deserves to be called an advocate of human rights and justice in Ethiopia out of conviction for a socially relevant belief? Do we have somebody anywhere close to personalities like Archbishop Desmond Tutu? How successful have we become in producing successful athletes, musicians, artists, philosophers and thinkers that we can look up to as leaders? When was the last time we have read famous literary works in the ranks of “Fikir Eske Mekaber” or “Adefris”? In almost every aspect of our national life, there is a decline and, even worse, a glaring lack of iconic leaders-role models that the young generation could look up to.

ቤተ ክርስቲያኒቱ ካለችበት ቀውስ አንጻር አሁን የሚያስፈልጋት ጥልቅ ራስን የምር የመፈተን ቁርጠኝነት ነው። የቤተ ክርስቲያኒቱን መሠረታዊ አስተምህሮዎች፣ ትውፊት እና ታሪክ ግምት ውስጥ ያስገባ የመንፈሳዊ እና ተቋማዊ ለውጥ አብዮት/ተሐድሶ ሊያመጣ የሚችል ራስን የመፈተሽ ተጋድሎ ይጠብቃታል። ሐውልት የሚቆምለት ተጋድሎም እርሱ ይሆናል። ይህ የለውጥ አብዮት ከየት ይነሣል፣ እነማን ያሥነሱታል፣ እንዴትና እንደ ምን ተጀምሮ በምን ይጠቃለል ይሆን? የሚሉት ጥያቄዎች ቀላል መልስ የላቸውም።

እስከዚያው ግን ቢያንስ ለድቀቱ ማስታወሻ ይሆን ዘንድ ለአባ ጳውሎስ የቆመው ሐውልት ባለበት ይቆይ። ባይሆን ከግርጌው የሰፈረውን ጽሑፍ መቀየር ይሻላል። “ወደ መንበሩ ከመጡ ጀምሮ የኢትዮጵያ ኦርቶዶክስ ቤተ ክርስቲያን የገባችበት መንፈሳዊ እና ተቋማዊ ድቀት በየዓመቱ 99.6 በመቶ እንዲያድግ ስላደረጉት መንፈሳዊና ስጋዊ ተጋድሎ ምስክር ይሆን ዘንድ ልጆቻቸው ይህንን ሐውልት አቆሙላቸው።” ሐውልቱን አታፍርሱት።

I am sure the owners of ESAT have thought seriously about the fantastic weapon they have built. They ought to be thanked by all Ethiopians who are eager to see a robust public sphere and alternative media in Ethiopia. Just before the start of the World Cup, the Spanish sports newspaper Marca had this amazing headline: “Spain Are the Best in the World; Now Prove It.” ESAT is a great idea; now prove it.
