Ethiopia: After Meles

Devolution to regional and local government structures has increased the shift of power away from Tigrayans, whose control of the police and military has been reduced in recent years. They now make up just over 18% of the army, down from well over half in the mid-1990s, and many senior Tigrayan officers have recently retired. Amhara soldiers have risen to 30% from 25% and Oromo to 25% from 21%. The Amhara opposition insists that Tigrayans run the federal government but this is no longer the case, say analysts in Addis.

Ethiopia after Meles

(René Lefort)

If Meles is out of the game, it is obviously in the best interest of the TPLF to take the initiative by putting forward a solution for his replacement as quickly as possible so as to keep its hold on power. Also, because Meles cleared away any possible contenders from his entourage, there is no obvious, strong candidate who could step in at short notice. “He will be leaving very big boots that cannot be filled by anyone else,” according to one of the founders of the Front, now a member of the opposition. The solution could therefore consist of entrusting formal power to the Deputy Prime Minister, Hailemariam Dessalegn, who is from the South. The other option is to find somebody else with the same profile, while the effective power, at least for the time being, would be in the hands of a collective leadership at the top the Front, the army and the security services playing a key role in its composition and in decision-making.

A Joint Statement: ‘Commission must stand up for human rights in Ethiopia’

In a joint statement issued today, December 20, 2010, Europe and Sweden based organizations and groups called the European Commission to take action against the Ethiopian Government. Among the signatories of this statement are European Federation of Journalists and Reporters Without Borders. The parties called that “Europe must also stand up for the role of the media as the watchdog of democracy by stating that what is happening now in Ethiopia is an issue larger than the case of the two Swedish journalists. The trial currently going on in Addis Ababa, where all parties are acting as expected, is in fact emblematic of the injustice done to the Ethiopian people by its own government.”
